Nate’s Bar Mitzvah – Temple Sinai

Say it ain’t so! After photographing Nate’s older brother Jonah’s bar mitzvah in 2014, and older sister Caroline’s bat mitzvah in 2016, now it was Nate’s turn. And sadly, that’s the end of the line for this family! What an extraordinary honor and privilege to have photographed all three siblings as they celebrated very special occasion. Thank you so much to parents Cindy and Todd for having me there! What a pleasure it was to be back at Temple Sinai for Nate’s service and to see so many now-familiar faces.

In the evening, Nate and his friends and family had a party at Dave and Buster’s.

Here are a few of my favorite photos from Nate’s bar mitzvah, which was also his birthday!

This was fun – lining up the sun in my viewfinder to shine through the iron gate outside Temple Sinai.

Liam’s Bar Mitzvah – Tree of Life/JCC

Two years ago, I photographed Hannah’s Bat Mitzvah at Tree of Life. And on June 2, it was Hannah’s brother Liam’s turn to celebrate becoming a Bar Mitzvah. What a popular date June 2 was this year! Every year there’s one date that’s the most popular, but I don’t know if I’ve ever received as many inquiries for a date as I did for June 2, 2018. So it was a good thing that Liam’s dad contacted me well in advance to reserve this in-demand date!

Tree of Life doesn’t permit photography at their Saturday services, so we met on Thursday afternoon for some photos of Liam and his immediate family on the bimah and in the sanctuary. Liam is one happy kid and was full of genuine smiles.

On Saturday evening, Liam celebrated with his family and friends at the JCC in Squirrel Hill. DJ Alex Foster provided some very upbeat and engaging entertainment that kept the kids and the adults on their feet all night. Guests were treated to some amazing dessert stations by Bella Christie – check out the liquid nitrogen station!

Here are some of my favorite photos.

On to the party at the JCC on Saturday evening!

Emily’s Bat Mitzvah – Temple Sinai and Carnegie Science Center

Mazel tov to Emily! Emily’s Bat Mitzvah service was on a very cold, snowy Saturday morning at Temple Sinai. She had family and friends from near and far, with far truly being far – England! Emily did wonderfully, teaching about the difference between determination and stubbornness.
In the evening, Emily and her family celebrated with a party in the Works Theater at the Carnegie Science Center.

Here are some of my favorites from the day.

Rabbi Gorban posed the question, “who here woke up today?” Emily did!

I always love this moment when the congregation throws candy at the Bar/Bat Mitzvah child…

… and I particularly loved that one of Emily’s friends stopped to give her a quick hug. (Note the exuberant boy leaping off the bimah, too.)Pittsburgh Temple Sinai Bat Mitzvah Pittsburgh Temple Sinai Bat Mitzvah Pittsburgh Temple Sinai Bat Mitzvah Rabbi Jamie Gibson

Hearing parents address their child is always my favorite part of the day. Emily’s mother, Jill, shared how at age 8 Emily had insisted on staying with their beloved family dog at the end of her life. And how one of Emily’s friends, going through a very difficult time, found that Emily was the only one she could open up to. I admit it, I pretty much always cry at this point!

The Works Theater at the Science Center is a great party environment! The kids get to take over the theater area, while the adults are in the open space outside the theater. I think kids and adults alike appreciate this setup 🙂
