Lauren & Sid’s wedding at Phipps Conservatory

When Lauren and Sid told me about their June 25 wedding in the outdoor garden at Phipps, I think we all pictured a very hot summer day. So it was a surprise when it turned out to be a cool day, more like early May than June.

Their wedding day began at the Omni William Penn in downtown Pittsburgh. I loved this detail on Lauren’s Watters gown.

undefinedLots and lots of smiles from Lauren, her mother and her maids of honor as she finally got to wear this gorgeous dress.

undefinedOne floor down, Sid perfected his bow tie.undefinedThere are those who feel strongly that they do or don’t want to see their soon-to-be spouse before their wedding ceremony. You can’t go wrong either way, but I am pretty partial to the First Look. As Lauren and Sid’s ceremony was not until 6pm, they chose to see each other and spend some time taking pictures ahead of time. So here they are, seeing each other in their impeccable wedding attire and enjoying some time to themselves.

Only Sid knows what he was thinking at this moment, but there’s no question that he’s feeling pretty happy right now.undefinedundefinedundefinedAfter taking the portraits above in Schenley Park, we made our way over to Phipps. Next photo by my fabulous assistant, Alisa Innocenti. Love the framing!

undefinedThese charming gentlemen were two of the seven groomsmen (plus two best men).undefinedI’ve occasionally heard brides and grooms say they don’t want to see each other before the ceremony because they want the moment they see each other from each of the aisle to have maximum impact. And I absolutely respect that choice! There’s nothing like it. However, I’d like to now present Sid to you. It’s been less than an hour since he’s seen Lauren, but look at how happy he is to see her walking down the aisle. Oh shucks, I may get teary again…undefinedundefinedThe outdoor garden is a beautiful, peaceful setting. The bride and groom stand right in front of the water feature – and I love that the staff turns the fountain off for the duration of the ceremony so guests can hear.undefinedSid and Lauren exchanged these beautiful garlands, and Sid also gave Lauren a mangalsutra – a necklace traditionally given in Hindu weddings, signifying that the marriage is official.

undefined

Sid is from North Carolina, and Lauren is from Pittsburgh. They met in law school in St. Louis, also lived in Boston, and now live in Brooklyn. So most of their guests traveled from somewhere else to attend. I truly enjoyed  all of the speeches and hearing how much both Sid and Lauren had touched the lives of those around them. Best man Debo (who really knows how to tell a story – I think he’d do great at The Moth) shared a hilarious touching story about playing baseball with Sid as young boys.

undefinedAnd maid of honor Grace shared that despite Lauren being prone to the occasional scowl and rant, what she really always wanted was to be treated like a princess, and that’s just what Sid does.

undefined

Remember the seven groomsmen and two best men? They were some of the liveliest, most energetic and flexible dancers I’ve ever seen. And DJ Steve Spin was absolutely fantastic, among the best wedding DJs I’ve heard, ever.

undefinedSo glad I was there for these final two photos:undefinedundefinedCongratulations, Lauren & Sid! Hope you enjoy every minute in Greece.

Christina, from a photographic perspective these photos are of course great, but what really sticks out is the way you captured their mood, emotion, and the story of their day. Such great reactions and I love that you can clearly see how much they love each other and how much fun everyone had. Awesome!

Christina, What a fantastic job ! You have an exceptional talent for capturing time in a photo ! I’ve heard people say you need a good “eye” to take Great Pictures you obviously have two great ones. Sid and Laurens’ wedding was one of the most picturesque I’ve ever seen and you captured it all ! What cherished memories they will have when they see the pictures. Also Thank You to Sid & Lauren for allowing my wife and I to share in there wonderful wedding.

Ah, weddings like this are so rare and special and a joy to see in photos. I imagine that it was hard to take a a picture where the guests looked bored or Lauren and Sid were disinterested.
Christina, great job with creative framing and use of light inside of the tent. I’m also happy that you were there to capture the last two photos–they’re my favorites!

Heather and Bill’s Pittsburgh Destination Wedding – Pirates Game at PNC Park

I have been looking forward to this wedding for quite a while! Any time in the past several months that anyone has asked me if I had any unusual weddings coming up, I’d tell them about Heather and Bill.

Heather and Bill aren’t all that different from many couples getting married. They’re clearly madly in love with each other, and they also share a deep love of Pittsburgh and baseball and PNC Park. So it seemed a perfect fit for them to plan their wedding ceremony to take place on the Gateway Clipper, and then celebrate at that evening’s Pirates game.

What’s so unusual, then? Well… they live in Canada. Not just Heather and Bill, but every one of their wedding guests traveled all the way from Canada (except for a few who came from even farther away). That’s right – this was a destination wedding, right here in beautiful Pittsburgh. I was so very honored to join in the wedding festivities and get to know all these fabulous foreigners. Going to a baseball game with them was especially fun since I got to hear them say “out” a whole lot. Love that Canadian accent!

I began the day with Heather and her bridesmaids as they got ready at the Sheraton at Station Square.

undefinedThen it was just a short walk over to the Gateway Clipper. Heather’s dress had pockets!undefinedOutdoor ceremonies are pretty worrisome, but we had a beautiful day for the ceremony, which took place on the top deck of the Gateway Clipper.undefinedundefinedundefinedThere was quite a bit of giggling during the ceremony.undefinedYou really can’t get a better view of The Point than right here on the water.undefinedAfter the ceremony, Heather and Bill had their first dance on the top deck.undefinedAnd then Bill made a little speech, thanking everyone for coming all the way to Pittsburgh.undefinedHeather offered a few thanks too… and got a little choked up and handed the microphone back to Bill.undefinedIt was HOT and these folks needed no encouragement to remove their shoes and step into the water. Refreshing!undefinedHeather and Bill were so excited to go into the stadium! Those people trailing a ways behind them are all of their guests. They couldn’t keep up with the happy couple’s blistering pace.undefinedundefinedundefinedundefinedMy favorite. Could they be any happier?!undefinedWith a sign like this, you’re likely to end up on the Jumbotron.undefinedIndeed, that didn’t take long! It’s the first inning and they’re already up on the Jumbotron.undefinedundefinedShouts of congratulations followed the newlyweds everywhere.undefinedIt’s a small world, after all… in the adjacent suite, another wedding party was celebrating the night away. Then we caught a glimpse of the groom. Okay, so these two really don’t look anything alike at all, unless you count the lack of hair on their heads, same facial hair, and tuxes with black vests… pretty surreal.undefined

Last one: Heather and Bill with the Parrot!undefined

Congratulations to two amazingly wonderful people! I hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Pittsburgh and have a fabulous trip to New York.

Love it! You captured some great and genuine moments; you can really tell how happy they were and how much fun everyone was having. So cool that they made it onto the Jumbotron and you were able to photograph it!

Randi Voss - June 14, 2011 - 2:53 pm

I would have never thought of Pittsburgh as a place people would come to for a destination wedding, but after seeing these photos, the city looks so much more exciting! I will admit that Heather and Bill play a huge role in why everything here looks so happy and fun. They obviously put a lot of planning and thought into their day and then finally got to ENJOY it. My favorite photos are the two with the Jumbo-tron and the wide photo following. Best!
