Wedding details: free spirit roses and other floral masterpieces

As an avid gardener, most of the time I can recognize and identify the flowers I see in bouquets, centerpieces and other floral arrangements. At least most of them. But sometimes there are flowers that I don’t know, and usually it’s these flowers that are truly remarkable.

Such was the case at Lauren and Sid’s beautiful June wedding in the outdoor garden at Phipps Conservatory. All of the flowers featured these amazing pale orange flowers with pink tips. I stared and stared at them, trying to figure out what they were – but it wasn’t until I spoke to the florist, Mount Lebanon Floral Shop, that I learned they’re called Free Spirit Roses. What a great name!

This gorgeous arrangement, which also featured white hydrangeas and berries, sat on the table alongside Sid and Lauren’s guestbook. And here you can also see the beautiful carved box for cards.

Pittsburgh Fireworks (not 4th of July, but in the spirit)

I’m currently in Boston enjoying a couple kid-free days with my husband, but in the spirit of 4th of July, am sharing a few fireworks photos. I shot these back on June 25th, when Pittsburgh held a big Skyblast and Huey Lewis concert in honor of Heather and Bill’s fabulous destination wedding. Okay, maybe not in their honor, but we can pretend, right?

Since Heather and Bill had their ceremony on the Gateway Clipper, and the boat dropped us all off at PNC Park, at the end of the night I got on another Gateway Clipper boat to be shuttled back over to Station Square where I’d parked my car. That gave me a great view of the fireworks and these photos.

It’s pretty difficult to get a great fireworks photo without a tripod – and I was not going to be carrying a tripod around all night – so I had to make do with leaning on the railing of the boat.

undefinedAs the boat was moving, I decided instead to focus my attention on non-fireworks, like these amazing reflections in the Allegheny River.undefinedAnd this downtown building looking kind of demonic from reflected red fireworks.

undefinedHappy 4th of July!
