Lauren & Sid’s wedding at Phipps Conservatory

When Lauren and Sid told me about their June 25 wedding in the outdoor garden at Phipps, I think we all pictured a very hot summer day. So it was a surprise when it turned out to be a cool day, more like early May than June.

Their wedding day began at the Omni William Penn in downtown Pittsburgh. I loved this detail on Lauren’s Watters gown.

undefinedLots and lots of smiles from Lauren, her mother and her maids of honor as she finally got to wear this gorgeous dress.

undefinedOne floor down, Sid perfected his bow tie.undefinedThere are those who feel strongly that they do or don’t want to see their soon-to-be spouse before their wedding ceremony. You can’t go wrong either way, but I am pretty partial to the First Look. As Lauren and Sid’s ceremony was not until 6pm, they chose to see each other and spend some time taking pictures ahead of time. So here they are, seeing each other in their impeccable wedding attire and enjoying some time to themselves.

Only Sid knows what he was thinking at this moment, but there’s no question that he’s feeling pretty happy right now.undefinedundefinedundefinedAfter taking the portraits above in Schenley Park, we made our way over to Phipps. Next photo by my fabulous assistant, Alisa Innocenti. Love the framing!

undefinedThese charming gentlemen were two of the seven groomsmen (plus two best men).undefinedI’ve occasionally heard brides and grooms say they don’t want to see each other before the ceremony because they want the moment they see each other from each of the aisle to have maximum impact. And I absolutely respect that choice! There’s nothing like it. However, I’d like to now present Sid to you. It’s been less than an hour since he’s seen Lauren, but look at how happy he is to see her walking down the aisle. Oh shucks, I may get teary again…undefinedundefinedThe outdoor garden is a beautiful, peaceful setting. The bride and groom stand right in front of the water feature – and I love that the staff turns the fountain off for the duration of the ceremony so guests can hear.undefinedSid and Lauren exchanged these beautiful garlands, and Sid also gave Lauren a mangalsutra – a necklace traditionally given in Hindu weddings, signifying that the marriage is official.

undefined

Sid is from North Carolina, and Lauren is from Pittsburgh. They met in law school in St. Louis, also lived in Boston, and now live in Brooklyn. So most of their guests traveled from somewhere else to attend. I truly enjoyed  all of the speeches and hearing how much both Sid and Lauren had touched the lives of those around them. Best man Debo (who really knows how to tell a story – I think he’d do great at The Moth) shared a hilarious touching story about playing baseball with Sid as young boys.

undefinedAnd maid of honor Grace shared that despite Lauren being prone to the occasional scowl and rant, what she really always wanted was to be treated like a princess, and that’s just what Sid does.

undefined

Remember the seven groomsmen and two best men? They were some of the liveliest, most energetic and flexible dancers I’ve ever seen. And DJ Steve Spin was absolutely fantastic, among the best wedding DJs I’ve heard, ever.

undefinedSo glad I was there for these final two photos:undefinedundefinedCongratulations, Lauren & Sid! Hope you enjoy every minute in Greece.

Christina, from a photographic perspective these photos are of course great, but what really sticks out is the way you captured their mood, emotion, and the story of their day. Such great reactions and I love that you can clearly see how much they love each other and how much fun everyone had. Awesome!

Christina, What a fantastic job ! You have an exceptional talent for capturing time in a photo ! I’ve heard people say you need a good “eye” to take Great Pictures you obviously have two great ones. Sid and Laurens’ wedding was one of the most picturesque I’ve ever seen and you captured it all ! What cherished memories they will have when they see the pictures. Also Thank You to Sid & Lauren for allowing my wife and I to share in there wonderful wedding.

Ah, weddings like this are so rare and special and a joy to see in photos. I imagine that it was hard to take a a picture where the guests looked bored or Lauren and Sid were disinterested.
Christina, great job with creative framing and use of light inside of the tent. I’m also happy that you were there to capture the last two photos–they’re my favorites!

Boys on Wheels

It’s a sure thing these days at my house that after dinner, either Leo (6) or Jonas (3) will say, “can we go for a walk?”

What they really mean is, “can we go ride our trike/scooter?”

We’re working on transitioning Leo to riding a 2-wheel bike, but for the moment he’s really pleased at how well he gets around on his razor scooter. And Jonas is thrilled to be pedaling away on his tricycle. Meanwhile, I can hardly stand how adorable they are. And it makes me so happy to see how much they enjoy being outside and doing the same things kids have done for generations. undefinedundefinedundefinedJonas’s favorite part is flying down the hill. Even though it means pulling the trike back up because it’s too steep for him to pedal.undefinedNaturally, they race.undefinedLeo tends to win.undefinedundefinedI try not to interfere with their fun, but some portraits must be made.undefinedundefinedundefined

Photographer end note… all images shot with a Canon 135mm f2L lens, which really is a very special piece of glass. Focuses faster than anything and the image quality is outstanding. Love it.

These are the cutest bikers I’ve ever seen. I’m so glad that you are making good use of the 135mm.
After seeing the photo of Jonas with his tongue out, I’m coming over to steal him! I love the photo of the race starting. <3
