South Side Works is a now a sleek, metropolitan shopping area on the south bank of the Allegheny River that formerly was…. I don’t know what it was. Steel mills, perhaps? Warehouses? It’s been rebuilt and is full of restaurants, upscale shops, and a movie theater. A plaza lies in the center, and in the center of the plaza is a ground-level fountain that shoots up at unpredictable intervals, splashing and soaking anyone that runs through. Kids love it.
When I took 1-year-old Jonas down there last weekend for a walk around, I was not sorry that the fountain wasn’t turned on yet. It was pretty warm and I’m sure he would have found it irresistible. In fact I was really warm and might have found it irresistible. But we had walked over the Hot Metal Street bridge to get there, and so had only a small bag along and no towel or change of clothes.
We discovered there’s a new brew pub there. Unfortunately for us it’s a German brew pub. If there’s a German beer I’ve liked, I can’t say I recall what it is. However, I did really like this new little plaza outside the brew pub. The table tops are chess boards.

On the way back, Jonas walked across the pedestrian side of the Hot Metal Street bridge, instead of riding on my back. He was so excited about this big, open space… until one of the Gateway Clipper boats came right up to the bridge and turned around… first sounding its very, very loud horn. Poor Jonas was terrified and immediately ran back to mom.
